Grow a delicious and hardy North American native fruit with Juneberry seeds. This heirloom, also known as Serviceberry or Saskatoon, is a beautiful and versatile shrub or small tree. It produces clusters of pretty white flowers in early spring, followed by an abundance of dark purple berries that ripen in June. The fruit looks much like a blueberry but has a unique and wonderful flavor of its own, often described as a mix of sweet cherry, almond, and raisin. Growing these from seed is a patient and rewarding project that results in a low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly plant.

• Sowing: Growing from seed is a long but rewarding process that mimics nature. The easiest method is to sow seeds outdoors in the fall and let winter stratify them naturally.
• Stratification (Required): To start indoors, seeds require a multi-stage process. First, the seed coat must be broken (scarification) by soaking. This is followed by a 60-day warm, moist period and then a 60-day cold, moist period in the refrigerator to break dormancy.
• Depth: Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep.
• Spacing: Space or thin plants to 10 feet apart.
• Light Requirement: Full Sun to Partial Shade.
• Soil: Prefers moist, well-draining soil.

Keep unused seeds dry and cool in a clearly labeled, closed container. Protect the packet from humidity and temperature swings, and retain the variety name and sowing notes for your next planting. Use the species-specific directions below when deciding whether to start indoors, sow directly, soak seeds, or provide a cold period. Germination and growth vary with seed handling and local growing conditions.
